During his Grammy acceptance speech, Jay-Z said something that resonated with me. He humanized Beyonce in a way I didn’t realize was possible. He ended his speech by encouraging the audience to continue showing up and doing the work until they received the recognition they believed they deserved.
A friend and I were having drinks the other night; he asked if he could ask me a personal question. I braced myself for the question but permitted him to proceed. “You have so much potential. What do you feel like is holding you back?” I thought to myself, I’m so glad you asked me that. I think about this question a lot. Why haven’t you made it yet?
It boils down to imposter syndrome. I’ve concluded that my day jobs have magnified my insecurities. The amount of work I put into “keeping the lights on” has made me feel inadequate. No matter how much I’ve accomplished through blogging, I’ve often felt like I have nothing to offer the world except cheap labor. However, reflecting on Jay-Z’s acceptance speech, I’m reminding myself that no one determines my worth except me. We have to show up until we get the recognition we deserve.
