New York Fashion Week: Men’s Spring 2019 Day 1

This past week I had the opportunity to get my first taste of New York Fashion Week: Men’s Spring 2019. If you’re following along on Instagram, you saw that I hinted at having a pretty traumatic experience. I’ll share more on that at the end.

My favorite collection from day one of New York Fashion Week Men’s was David Hart. The seventies have been trending for a while now, but each designer’s take on the decade is still interesting. I loved DH’s bold color story. The clothes felt authentic to the era but not so costumey that the pieces couldn’t be incorporated into your wardrobe today. I also loved the lavish embellishments. Glittery, heeled Louboutins aren’t practical (just like my sequin blazer) but I’m down to give them try. The pieces I’m the most excited about were there the bright knit polos. Out of everything, they’ll be the most wearable pieces from the collection. Check out the collection below as well as more highlights from Day 1 of New York Fashion Week: Men’s Spring 2019.

Day 2

As I mentioned before, I had a bit of hard time on this trip. Fashion week itself wasn’t that bad, just hectic. In fact I’m already looking forward to attending next season. New York City however was as rough as I imagined. On Day 1, I struggled navigating around the city, especially with my phone on 20% at 10am! I also didn’t get any outfit photos which I’m still a little bummed about. Day 2 is when things went downhill.
Since this was my first fashion week, I wasn’t invited to very many events. I actually had a free day on Day 2 so I decided to see the Heavenly Bodies exhibit at the Met. One thing I’ve taken away from this experience is that I shouldn’t always travel alone. With directions from a friend I made it halfway to the exhibit by the subway. This was after traveling in the wrong direction first. All I needed to do was cut through Central Park to finally make it to the museum. About halfway, I realized I didn’t have my wallet.
Before panicking, I emptied out my briefcase to make sure it wasn’t on me. There’s nothing worse than freaking out over something that was with you the whole time. But it wasn’t in there. I Immediately started retracing my steps.

After walking around for a while, I realized I wouldn’t find my wallet. That’s when panic started to set in. It was 11am, I had no money and nowhere to go until I could get back into my fraternity brother’s apartment. But that wouldn’t be until 6pm when he got off from work. So I reached out to my bank and explained the situation. Luckily they connected me to a bank where I could withdraw a bit of cash to carry me over. At this point my main concern was how I would board my returning flight without an ID. So I continued walking around and checking the subway to see if my wallet would turn up.

I finally broke down and called my mom (after texting her an SOS and not getting a response). I was expecting a scolding, but instead we brainstormed. We decided she’d overnight my passport to replace my driver’s license. It had been a rough day, but somehow I managed to navigate the entire situation without losing my cool. Sadly, my bad luck wouldn’t end there.

Day 3

The next morning I woke up early to retrieve my passport from the mail and catch my returning flight. The passport should have arrived by 8am, but by 8:30 it still hadn’t made it. I tracked it discovered that mom and I were given the wrong service. So my passport was scheduled to arrive by 8pm instead. I found out there was a possibility I could make it through TSA with an extensive screening. So I got a Via and made my way to the airport.

On the way to the airport I received an alert that my flight had been delayed which was great news. I could use the extra time to clear security. When I arrive at the airport to check my bag, I realize the line isn’t moving. Everyone’s whispering about what’s going on but no one’s exactly sure. Then I get a second alert notifying me that I’d received a voucher to use towards a future flight with Allegiant. Finally I get a third alert that my flight has been canceled. Everything about the trip has been so horrible that it’s comical at this point. I try to reschedule my flight with Allegiant but of course that next flight isn’t for another two days.

So I do a little research and find an alternative flight that ends up costing me almost $500. After booking my flight and checking my bag, I race to get to security. I explain my situation to TSA and they pull me aside for my special screening. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be or it wasn’t worse than what I had already experienced. Regardless, I passed the tests and made it to my flight with a few minutes to spare.

My Final Takeaway

This experience was pretty horrible but I was proud of how I handled the situation. I don’t plan on traveling again anytime soon. But I do want to try fashion week again with everything that I’ve learned from this season. If you guys have ever done Fashion Week, what was your first experience like?
