When you think of traditional Kentucky food, I’m sure fried chicken is the first thing that comes to mind. But Kentucky’s culinary heritage is a lot more rich than one would expect. If you needed a little proof, Kentucky will actually host the upcoming season of “Top Chef”. Kentucky Tourism also just launched a culinary initiative called Better in the Bluegrass that will help promote Kentucky’s growing food scene. So any foodie should consider making Kentucky their next travel destination.
Kentucky State Parks Culinary Trail
Last week I spent the day at Lake Cumberland with Kentucky Tourism to kickoff their new Kentucky State Parks Culinary Trail, part of the Better In The Bluegrass Culinary Tourism Initiative. The preview event featured foods from nine KY State Park restaurants celebrating Kentucky’s traditional cuisine. Chefs, farmers and many more collaborated to create dishes representing the nine tourism regions.
My family didn’t travel much when I was a kid so I’m now making up for lost time. The goal of the Kentucky State Park Culinary Trail is to inspire people to visit every part of Kentucky. It also makes it easy for visitors to get a more authentic taste of Kentucky cuisine. This was my first time visiting Lake Cumberland. It’s such quiet and scenic place to escape. I’m looking forward to checking out the other KY State Parks.
What to Eat In Kentucky
There were so many different dishes to sample and sadly I didn’t get to try everything. All the foods I did have a chance to try at were amazing, which included soup bean & spider cornbread, salmon patties, cherry ale-8-one, local cheeses, and chow-chow. I’m not a picky eater by any means, but I do have a thing about textures especially with fruit and vegetables. One of my favorite featured dishes happened to be the tomato pie representing Northern Kentucky. My two other favorites were the peach cobbler and the cucumber, tomato, and onion salad.
The Kentucky State Parks Culinary Trail began May 14 and will run through October 31. You can get in on the fun by sharing your signature meal photos with #TasteKY. As an added bonus, you’ll receive a free a gift after visiting all nine parks. Pick up a Culinary Passport at any Kentucky State Park. Then you’ll collect stamps after trying the signature meal at all nine parks. You can learn more about the Better In the Bluegrass Culinary Initiative by visiting the following link.
